Laser Animation Laboratory Under Construction
at Jadavpur University



A year ago on March 25, 2011, 2 pm, at the inaugural ceremony, the ribbon was cut by Prof. S. Dutta, Pro-Vice Chancellor of
Jadavpur University. The laser machine was started by Prof. A.K. Chakraborty, M. Tech, Outstanding Scientist, DRDO, and Assoc. Director, DRDL, Hyderabad. Other dignitaries present were Prof. N. Chakraborti, Dean-FET JU, Prof. A. Mukherjee, Head of Electrical Dept. JU, and Prof. (Dr.) Saswati Mazumdar, Director, School of Illumination Science, Engineering
& Design (SISED), JU. A small room adjacent to the existing photometric lab was used as an interim Manick Sorcar Laser Animation Lab. On the wall there was an auto-cad generated floor plan of the future animation lab., for which money was sanctioned by the university. Construction started in October, 2011.

The university sanctioned Rs. 34 lakh for its construction, while all equipment at the laboratory, worth over Rs. 50 lakh (USD 100,000) was donated by Manick Sorcar. The laser Animation classes will be held inside this laboratory. A portion of the floor would also contain the laboratories for testing HID Lamp Life, LED, Ingress Protection, Glow wire etc., all of which are a part of electrical and illumination engineering curriculum.
