Born in Bengal, India, Manick Sorcar's love with art world
started when he was very young. At the tender age of 10 he started
helping in painting the many back drops and props for his late
father's magic show. His father P.C. Sorcar, was renowned magician
who toured around the world with his elaborate show with huge
stage settings.
Observing his potential talents in art as well as lighting, his
father encouraged him to get more involved. At the age of 18,
Manick Sorcar developed the technique
of painting on "sand-mica" sheets (a heat-resistant,
clear, natural sand product) which, then could be rotated in front
of a light source for the effects of moving scenes such as clouds,
stars etc. In 1964 he moved to Benares, another city, to attend
Benares Hindu University. His simultaneous love for art and science
eventually led him to become an electrical
engineer with lighting specialty and an artist that he is
today.
